The meaning of colours and images on surname coats of arms (family crests) and shields<\/h2>\n

A listing with their meaning for some of the most commonly used images used in heraldry, appearing on surname coats of arms (or family crests), shields and crests (the smaller image above the helmet on a coat of arms), along with the heraldic colours (or tinctures) used.<\/p>\n

Heraldry Tinctures (Colours) & Their Meaning<\/h2>\n

The two metallic colours<\/em><\/strong> are:<\/p>\n

Silver<\/strong> (or White<\/strong>) (Argent or ‘Ar.’) Meaning<\/strong>: Peace and sincerity.
\nGold<\/strong> (Or) Meaning<\/strong>: Generosity and elevation of the mind.<\/p>\n

The five tinctures<\/em><\/strong> (or colours<\/em><\/strong>) are:<\/p>\n

Black<\/strong> (Sable or ‘Sa.’) Meaning<\/strong>: Constancy or grief.
\nBlue<\/strong> (Azure or ‘Az.’) Meaning<\/strong>: Truth and loyalty.
\nGreen<\/strong> (Vert) Meaning<\/strong>: Hope, joy, and loyalty in love.
\nRed<\/strong> (Gules or ‘Gu.’) Meaning<\/strong>: Magnanimity, warrior or military strength, and martyr.
\nPurple<\/strong> (or ‘Purp.) Meaning<\/strong>: Royal majesty, sovereignty, and justice.<\/p>\n

The word proper<\/em><\/strong> is used to mean something in its natural or normal colour, so an eagle proper<\/em><\/strong> would appear with brown feathers, and a lion proper<\/em><\/strong> would be in its natural tan or yellow-gold colour.<\/p>\n

Those above are the main and normal tinctures, but occasionally a few other colours may be used, these are: <\/p>\n

Orange<\/strong> (Tawny or Tenne) Meaning<\/strong>: Worthy ambition.
\nMaroon<\/strong> (Sanguine or Murray) Meaning<\/strong>: Fortitude or victorious.<\/div>\n
